How Clay Imports uses Biodegradable Materials

Giving back what earth gave us

By Clay Imports

At Clay Imports, we prioritize sustainability by not only crafting with natural materials, we also created a system that benefits everyone involved in the production process, from makers and designers to producers and consumers. One of the steps of this system is to find the most environmentally friendly products for packaging, so we avoid using materials that will end up in the trash. Here you’ll find why we do this and how you can also contribute to keeping the environment safe.

Biodegradable Packaging Materials

We send your products in the most environmentally friendly package possible, by using only 3 biodegradable materials: Paper, cardboard and hydrosoluble packaging peanuts. This way, we can ensure you can recycle all the packaging materials while avoiding sending more trash to landfills.

All our packing materials are made of different kinds of paper

Landfills are increasingly becoming a danger in the US. Not only do they take up a lot of landscape, according to the University of Colorado, the creation of landfills is destroying natural habitats for wildlife. The average landfill size is 600 acres, and with over 3,000 active landfills in the United States, as much as 1,800,000 acres of habitat have been lost.

Fortunately, the same source also gives us alternatives to save landfill space. Recycle! The easiest material to recycle is paper. The American Forest & Paper association reported that in 2022, the paper recycling rate was nearly 68% and the recycling rate for cardboard boxes was more than 93%, an increase from 2021.

So let’s take a look at what kind of recycling materials you should be expecting when ordering Clay Imports products.

Cardboard and paper as packaging materials

We use paper to protect the tiles inside our cardboard boxes. Paper is more environmentally friendly than bubble plastic or other protective packaging materials. Once you have your package, you can toss this paper in your recycling bin as any other piece of paper. It is estimated that about 26% of all waste in U.S landfills is paper and cardboard waste. So, by recycling, we are not only giving this material another chance of use, we avoid sending these things to a place where they will probably cause more harm than good.

We protect our material with different kinds of recyclable paper

Our boxes are made of cardboard and carton, which is 100% recyclable. You can throw them in with your paper recyclable bin, because despite being brown, thick and bigger than a regular paper sheet, a cardboard box is just a lot of paper glued together. Not only that, but you can also add some shredded cardboard to your compost, so you can feed your plants.

What are hydrosoluble peanuts?

Peanuts are the small white foam pieces inside almost all packages and are used to protect fragile shipments. They have historically been made from polystyrene, more commonly known as styrofoam, which does not break down once discarded and can spend years in landfills, lakes, oceans, and waterways. Fortunately, many businesses are switching to peanuts made of natural materials like wheat and corn starch. And one of those businesses is Clay Imports. We use hydrosoluble peanuts, which means that once the peanuts have contact with water, they dissolve into non toxic waste.

Peanuts and other packaging products made to protect fragile packages have raised significant concerns in terms of its environmental impact. By using materials that are recyclable and compostable, we help the planet and we can lower the costs of our packing materials.

Why is it important to recycle packaging materials?

In response to growing environmental awareness and the need for sustainable solutions, eco-friendly alternatives are gaining more importance. We are constantly working towards this awareness: we are transitioning into a fully digital store. Additionally, we choose to reduce our paper waste by offering all our catalogs exclusively in digital form on our website.

Many of our products are heavy and fragile and require the extra protection to arrive in safe condition. We try to do everything to reduce our plastic waste, but sometimes our packages might have some foam or plastic tape. Fortunately, you can see how to dispose of all your plastics in a safe way by following these simple steps.

By implementing these advancements, Clay Imports helps to promise a future where we can safely send and receive packages without compromising the health of our planet. And remember, if you have any questions or require more information, reach out to us at contact@clayimports.com
